Music Monday: Echosmith

If you love indie-pop then you're going to just love my Music Monday offering today: Echosmith.

Echosmith started their music career like many by posting YouTube cover videos of artists such as Adele, Coldplay and Mumford and Sons, and are now at a stage where they are releasing a highly anticipated debut album. They were originally called 'Ready, Set, Go!' and they all hail from Southern California. The group is composed of four siblings: Graham, Sydney, Noah and Jamie with ages ranging from about 17 to 21 (I'm getting a Corrs kind of feel here!). In 2012 they were spotted by the infamous Warner Bros Records, changed their name to 'Echosmith', and went on tour with Owl City on the Midsummer Station Tour.

Their stand out track is 'Cool Kids' and it's in many ways not incredibly ground breaking, but the general lyrical theme is sort of timeless, and one I think so many will connect to. Musically, it's an indie pop gem, reminiscent of successful pop acts such as Foster the People. The formulated hook draws you into the basic chord progression; the musical structure doesn't veer too far from the tried-and-true top 40 hit formula. But it's the lyrics that are going to make you reminisce back to your school days, or times when you just wanted to fit in so badly. That's really what 'Cool Kids' is all about withlyrics such as 'I wish that I could be like the cool kids, 'cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.' Because we've all been there right? That feeling of wanting to be like everyone is very relatable to lots of age demographics. Sydney, the lead singer, has a lilting voice ever so reminiscent of Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding so they have a really current, likeable sound. I think big things are in the horizon for these guys. They're so young and so talented it can only get bigger and more exciting.

Are any of you Echosmith fans? They actually have a gig in Camden, London tonight, and it's times like this (and only times like this) that I despair how far away from London I am! But still, they are on tour for a little while, so to keep up to date with their latest gigs head to their website here. And of course they are on Twitter and Facebook.
