REVIEW: Lauren Conrad ‘Beauty’ Book

From Marilyn Monroe’s 50s pin up look, to Twiggy’s mod look every era has a beauty icon, and perhaps for many Lauren Conrad is that girl. Thrust into the limelight from her early teen years when she was plucked by MTV producers at her high school and later became the star of ‘Laguna Beach’ and ‘The Hills’ (these shows dominated my teen years, I don’t know about you guys!). Between these two shows the beauty of Lauren emerged, and that’s not in a ‘she was prettier here and there’ type of way because she has always been beautiful, but her ‘beauty’ metamorphosed from that Orange County sun-kissed tanned look, with pin-straight blonde hair, to her later Hills years where Lauren started to experiment more with her style, beauty and look, whilst still maintaining that sun-kissed LA vibe, her look blossomed into something very glossy, on point and you could tell she felt comfortable at last, in her own skin. In recent times, Lauren and her beauty team set up a blog, dubbed as, ‘your daily dose of pretty’ called The Beauty Department, which I must admit, is one of favourite ever beauty blogs, and to me completely led the way for Lauren to write a book about her beauty journey.

Writing a book isn’t exactly something new to Lauren Conrad, with most notably her novel ‘La Candy’ and the ‘Fame Game’ series, she then went on to publish the simply titled 'Style' which I reviewed a few years ago and really liked. In this book, Lauren did touch base on a few things that have come to symbolise her look such as how she achieves those luscious soft effortless boho waves to her infamous winged liner. It was clear her readers wanted more, especially with the popularity of 'The Beauty Department' blog and so what followed was a book again, with a simple and on point title, ‘Beauty’.

Now, as I stated in my review of her 'Style' book the information in this book isn’t new at all. If you’re a beauty fanatic or a pro then you’re not going to learn an awful lot from it, however if you adore Lauren Conrad, and admire her style you will find yourself really loving this. What I really loved about this book is that Lauren has done a wonderful job at selecting the important elements of basic beauty, make up and hair tips but does so in a way that is not focused on societies stereotypical view of beauty at all (in fact, she begins the book with her beauty evolution!) but rather focuses on the importance of inner beauty and showing that on the outside, with a chapter dedicated to well-being, fitness and maintaining stress. I think that’s really lovely because I think whilst I loved reading this, I think a beauty book like this would have been my even closer BFF in my young teens when I was first getting into make up, and she really does convey that beauty is more than skin deep message perfectly. What I also loved was the fact for many of the step-by-step guides she uses a variety of different girls in her picture examples as well as herself.

As with all Lauren Conrad books the style is very minimalistic throughout with simple no-named product images, some pages with just text, and other with photos of Lauren or other models, but in essence all very simple and classic. Every chapter opens up with a little thought from Lauren about the topic in mind, and I really love Lauren’s easy-going writing style, it’s very friendly and endearing. I also particularly liked the fact Lauren talked ingredients to avoid in products as this can often be overlooked, but secretly I wish she could have named some of her favourites as I bet she has such an enviable beauty stash! Another of my favourite features was the ending where she illustrated beauty looks throughout the decades as I feel that truly reinforces that whole, ‘let me help you find your look’ element that Lauren so skilfully masters throughout.

Whilst so many of Lauren’s ‘Laguna Beach’ and ‘Hills’ co-stars have fallen off the deep end or into oblivion, Lauren has managed to leverage her persona into a booming business and keeping notably scandal-free in the process. She’s one of few Hollywood starlets I can think of that still oozes that old school glamour, femininity and class that I think young girls can truly aspire to, and that’s why I think a copy of this book would truly be, in the main, aimed at them. The book however truly corresponds to my expectations, I really enjoyed reading it, all the tutiorials, and the photos, and along with Bobbi Brown and Jemma Kid’s beauty books, it will become one of my favourites.

Does anyone else own a copy of this? Are you a Lauren Conrad fan? Would love to know what your opinions may be. Perhaps you have a favourite beauty guide of your own and if so, I’d love to know what that may be! Oh and I literally just edited this in at the last minute, but how utterly beautiful is the cover photo? So completely stunning.
