Exploring Toledo, Spain

144148165170197204214234250251So a few weeks ago I was really fortunate to go to Madrid and whilst there I also visited this jewel of a place called Toledo, a UNESCO Word Heritage site which is about 45 minutes from Madrid city centre. It truly is one of the most picturesque places I have ever visited and if you are planning on ever visiting the Madrid area of Spain you must sneak in a visit.

Steeped in history, Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments and at times really felt as though time had stood still as it has been preserved so well. It is known as the ‘city of the three cultures’, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries and all around you can find an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. It is because of  this great diversity of artistic styles that has made the old quarter of the capital of La Mancha as I said a place where time has literally stopped, an open museum if you like, which unsurprisingly led it to be a World Heritage Site. I took so, so many photos but because this isn’t a travel blog per-se it seemed a bit ridiculous to post too many, but I hope the above captures the essence of this truly magical place.
