An iconic Beatles riff is played to a black and white video backdrop of screaming girls as they await the arrival of the fab four: This is 60s Beatlemania, but for the Fall 2012 season and this night in New York, it transforms into the ever so aptly named 'Betseymania'. Yes that's right, Betseymania is of course Betsey Johnson, who takes her fun eccentric self back to the swinging sixties.

Models strut down the runaway revitalizing the 60s feel in skinny herringbone suits, boyish coats, miniskirts, hounds tooth print, psychedelic prints, maxi dresses, floppy boho hats, fluffy faux fur trims, hot fuchsia pink tights, berets and John Lennon style glasses to a soundtrack of music from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield. So from the outset it's like literally stepping back onto the streets of Liverpool and Carnaby Street, but look closely and you'll see true stamps of Betseymania quite literally all over this collection. From the very opening ultra tight flirty suit fitting, the eye-watering splash of neon mini skirts, a very Elsa Schiaparelli Surrealist esque skeleton mini dress (glittering printed too, to make even more of a catwalk impact!), to the whole soundtrack which yes is of course of its time, but with an updated dupstep remix!

And this is of course why I love Betsey. It's that tongue-in-cheek approach that makes a Betsey show like a party, and illustrates time and time again that fashion really is fun. She of course asserts this furthermore at the end of all her shows with her infamous catwalk cartwheel (this lady is 69 people, 69...I kid you not!) and the obligatory finale of scantily clad models in silver miniskirts sayashing down the runway with poms poms. I think I warm to this collection more than last season because Betsey Johnson totally embodies the Sixties to me, and also I am literally still living Beatlemania! I mean, she was at the heart of the Youthquake (1960s fashion, musical and cultural movement) fashion movement and Andy Warhol's underground scene, along with The Velvet Underground, Edie Sedgwick, Lou Reed and Mary Quant. So whereas a lot of it may not be 'textbook' Sixties-ish, it's Betsey's Sixties, and if anyone knows how to rock this period of fashion history it's her, it's Betseymania!

You can check out the whole show above, but I have also included some image highlights. I haven’t talked much about the make up but I’m so impressed at the eye make up! Normally Betsey shows aren’t about the make up but wow, this is a something worthy of a re-create for sure! So now I'd love to know what you think of the collection, and are you a Betsey Johnson fan?
