Wonder Skin Drink: Vita Coco-100% Coconut Water

You’ve already seen this being mentioned in my recent favourites post, but I’ve yet to tell you all why I love it so much! But as you all know, I’m a huge fan of not just buying products to enhance beautiful skin, but also to eat my way to more beautiful skin. Whoever said you are what you eat is I’m afraid very true! So when I heard about the highly raved about Vita Coco, I absolutely had to get some. Some of you may have heard of this little drink, others may have not, so I’ll do my best to attempt a quick summary (although you know how I ramble on and on!).
IMG_8887Vita Coco is a line of drinks created by Mike Kirban and business partner Ira Liran in 2004 that are based on 100% pure coconut water. But wait, I know what you’re imagining…long sandy tropical beaches sipping the coco nutty goodness with a straw from brown fuzzy coconuts that dominate popular culture. Well actually, that’s not quite the case with Vita Coco. As you can see on the carton, Vita Coco uses green coconuts for their drinks. That’s because the young green coconuts have all the nutrition and health benefits. The green coconuts that Vita Coco uses are harvested in the north of Brazil, in a farm near Fortaleza. The average age of  coconut is about 7 months, which is the best age to extract sweet coconut water that is fat-free before the coconut ages, turns brown and the water turns to the hard ‘meaty’ fat laden stuff we’re all so used to seeing. Coconut water  is low in calories and has no fat and a lot less sugar than most juices. But perhaps its most important attribute is that it is an excellent rehydrater. There’s so many benefits I’d be here all night, so here’s a mini breakdown:
* Remarkably (and you may find this hard to believe) Vita Coco has 20 times more potassium than that found in sport drinks. Wow, right?!
* Furthermore, it’s naturally loaded with the five key electrolytes: potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and calcium.
* A 330ml carton contains more potassium than two bananas.
* Helps create a healthy immune system, balances digestive system, eases period pain and cramp, and helps balance your metabolism.

IMG_8899I’ve been drinking this for a while now and although I’m not crazy about the taste, the results for me are just fantastic. Most importantly, my skin is looking so healthy I’m ecstatic. I struggle to drink the right amount of water each day, but this really keeps me hydrated. And ahh, the taste, I knew you were going to ask! Hmm, how to explain. Well, imagine milk leftover from cereal, or slightly bitter-sweet milk. That’s the best I can describe it as! For me personally, I’m not so keen BUT as I have stated on this blog before, and rather embarrassingly so, I literally only drink two drinks. Yes, two drinks: orange juice and water! They are the only two I enjoy. I do however enjoy the flavoured ones which include:  Passion Fruit, Peach-Mango, Pineapple, Tangerine (currently can’t find this one in the UK though), and Açaí & Pomegranate. I’d definitely recommend them over the plain coconut water, but not if you’re on a diet.
So yes even though I’m not crazy on the taste, I think most of you will love it, and the benefits are so wonderful that I’m never going to be without this now! And if you’re still not convinced, it’s THE celebrity drink of the moment, with even the likes of Madonna and Demi Moore investing in the company.
Vita Coco is available pretty much all over the USA and Canada. In the UK it is available at Waitrose, Holland & Barrett, Whole Foods and Planet Organic. I always get mine from Waitrose, although I’m desperate to find the Tangerine flavour. Have any of you tried Vita Coco before? Let me know below :).
