Introduction to Vintage Clothing & Vintage Clothing Fair Experience

So this weekend I had a very vintage weekend. I dressed up '40s style on Saturday, and then went to a vintage fair on Sunday. I absolutely adore vintage clothing, but I have no real life friends who share my passion, and actually it's not discussed much on blogs...am I weird?! haha. Anyway, I regularly go vintage shopping all over the country, but before I tell you all about it, here's a little breakdown of what vintage clothing is:

♥ What is vintage clothing?
Vintage clothing is a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. The word 'vintage' comes from its use in wine terminology, as a more elegant-seeming euphemism for 'old' clothes! But basically it is 'old clothes'!

♥ When does vintage fashion start?

Clothing produced before the 1920s is referred to as 'antique' clothing. Clothing from the 1920s to the 1980s is considered 'vintage'. When people use the word 'retro' it usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. It's not really strictly vintage.

♥ Is vintage clothing all second hand?

Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but it's not all second hand. The unworn clothes are often more valuable than those that have been worn, especially if they have their original tags.

When did vintage clothing become the 'in' thing?

There has always been an appreciation of vintage clothing, but it really became fashionable in the 1990s. This increase is due to celebrities increasingly wearing vintage clothing such as Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, Dita von Teese to name but a few. The advent of the Internet has increased the availability of vintage clothing and thus has made it more accessible to everyone. You can even find vintage clothing on Ebay!

So the vintage fair I went to was really good. I found a ton of dresses I loved but I always have to spend a lot of money altering vintage dresses so normally pick up accessories. I don't really want to do a haul post, so I'm just going to pick some stuff I think would particularly interest you all! But firstly, I did get a dress...but I know for a fact it isn't vintage....because my lovely fashionistas, is this, or is this not a Topshop dress?!
I found it on the floor when I was looking through some dresses. To me it's an EXACT copy of the Topshop dress but it has no Topshop labels, just something that says 'blue'. It has a very distinct vintage smell and look to it, but I know for a fact it isn't vintage. So you're probably wondering why I got it, right? Well, because I adored this dress when it was out at Topshop and when I saw it looking sad on the floor for £12 in my size...I HAD to get it!
So now I'll give you a peek at my favourite purchase of the day....BIBA MAKE UP!!!! I was so ridiculously excited to see this as I am obsessed with all things Biba. If you don't know what it is, then think Topshop in the 1960s and '70s. So yeah...amazing! I picked up two make up bits. A gorgeous eyeshadow called 'Chestnut'....
And the most beautiful cream blusher called 'Pink Rose'. As you can see, I've already tried it out! Both items are PACKED with pigments and absolutely amazing. Today's make up companies need to take notes! So what do you think of vintage clothing? Do you have vintage items? Or is it just not your thing? I personally adore vintage style and clothing. For me it's an appreciation of the past, and stepping into the roles of previous generations. I love when I wear something vintage, that it has so much history behind it. There is also the element that I'm doing my bit for the environment, by reusing beautiful clothes. If you want to find out a bit more then click here for more information about vintage clothing, and be sure to let me know what you think below. I may do an OOTD featuring vintage clothes, good idea?!

  4. I wish I had more vintage clothing than I do, but I do have a few gorgeous dresses and some vintage cowboy boots. Its just so expensive these days (or at least it is in the parts of London I do my shopping) or I don't have the time to rummage any more. I'm also bad at sewing, and often I find something which I know could be repaired or have new buttons put on it, but if I did it myself it would look like poo

  7. I have the Topshop one and it has lace on the sleeves, so I think it's a copy. Bargain at £12 though!
I am another vintage lover. The clothes are cut for my hourglass shape more than those in most high street shops.
Armstrong's is AMAZING. Have you been to Jack & Danny's in Bath?

  8. @ beautyandthebeast- Biba jeans?! So jealous, they sound amazing!]

@ Robyn- it can be expensive, but the fair I went to wasn't too bad. Have you tried that sort of thing out?

@ libys11- thanks! Me too, vintage rules :).

@ tackyblueeyeshadow- so glad you're a fan too! It's true escapism, isn't it? I love it.

@ Laura- I know, I was shocked it was on the floor and £12! How do you like yours? No I haven't heard of Jack & Danny's shamefully. I don't frequent Bath much, but I really want to go on a little shopping trip there sometime soon.
