REVIEW: Lauren Luke's book 'Look like a Star'

I'm going to do a review today about quite possibly one of the most famous women on the internet- Miss Lauren Luke- although her YouTube moniker panacea81 may be more familiar to you. She's the ultimate modern day success story, who rose to fame by being one of the first beauty gurus on Youtube, making make up tutorials accessible to the everyday girls and boys! Since then, she's had phenomenal success, with millions of hits overall on her channel as well as launching her own make up collection in the last year to worldwide success. It was only a matter of time, therefore, until Lauren shares her journey to all in this new book, released earlier this year. I have to confess, I haven't got around to purchasing anything from her make up line yet as quite frankly, I have too much! The book was definitely something I was interested in as I adore make up books, especially my beloved Kevyn Aucoin ones.

The book starts with Lauren's story in her own words, which I found totally inspiring. It was a great way to start the book. From there, Lauren goes through some basics of make up, like where blusher goes, and what to do with bronzer. For me personally, I liked this part, but I think Lauren's videos are a far better source for conveying these basics, so make up newbies should definitely go and check that out. But for those who prefer to learn things by reading and little diagrams then you may prefer the books approach. However the main bulk of the book is what Lauren does best- her celebrity inspired looks. With everyone from Leona Lewis(which of course catapulted Lauren to worldwide fame with her 'Bleeding Love' inspired look). Lauren gives you step-by-step instructions to get your desired look, just like she does on Youtube, but what I love about the book is how you get a whole picture of the celebrity, and then a really good photo of her at the end of her wearing each look. She looks beautiful in every single style, from Sixties beauty Twiggy (my favourite look for sure!) to the Glamour queen look of Katie Price. I really love this section, because I think Lauren has a real natural flair for this sort of thing, she really makes each look work for her, and yet makes it her own...does that make sense? I've put a photo above of an example of how she achieves an Audrey Hepburn look.

Overall: The book is claimed to be the one no girl should be without, and whilst I don't think it's the best book for showing you the basics of make up, that doesn't matter for me. My favourite bit is of course the celebrity looks, they're so well achieved. My least favourite section if I had to choose? Probably the paintbox. I felt that it didn't really have a wide enough range. But what I love most about this book is how everything is real. The model, Lauren, is as real as it gets. She's not some size 0, airbrushed model who we see constantly in glossy make up spreads- she's just Lauren and we love her for it. She is the perfect example of someone with a passion and a dream, and someone who had the courage to fulfill this dream, despite those who told her she'd never make it. She deserves all the success she has achieved and Lauren, if you're reading this, I'm so proud of you. If you love make up and Lauren then go and get this book now. You'll definitely feel like a star once you've finished reading. 4.5/5.

I got my book at Waterstones but it can also be purchased at Amazon. For more on Lauren Luke check out her youtube or her website. I'd love to hear your views on Lauren's success! Leave them below!
